Your Summer Movie Guide 2008

Hands up who has been indulging in a cheeky little grin at the thought that the summer blockbusters are nearly upon us! Hooray! I know I have.

The fabulous folks at Entertainment Weekly have provided a jam-packed Summer Movie Preview in their latest issue (on newsstands right now) so, giving credit where credit is due, we have them and IMDb to thank for some of the following source material. Cheers guys!

Entertainment Weekly claims to have the “inside buzz” on over 100 summer movies, but I’m not going to cover ALL of them. However, I will provide as much as I can on the bigger movies that are planned for the next few months, as well as some smaller films that I think sounded either entertaining, fun or simply cute (because there are always those cute, overlooked movies that don’t get enough buzz). So, strap yourselves in and enjoy the ride....

Canadian Awards for the Electronic and Animated Arts – The ELANS Come To Vancouver

The 2nd annual ELANS were held on Friday night and FADPOV was on hand to enjoy this black tie, red carpet event set up to honor the animated and gaming industries… basking in the glory of Seth McFarlane as host for the evening.

It all started off really well, with canapés and belinis in a mingling reception before the ceremony at the Centre for Performing Arts in Vancouver. Everyone looked gorgeous in formal wear and tuxes (we like to think we also scrubbed up nicely too...

FADPOV's Best of 2007

So much happened in television and movies throughout 2007 that a few of the editors here at FADPOV decided to choose our favorite moments, people, shows and movies of the year.  The choices were tough ones (and one of us had a little bit of trouble making up her mind about anything!) but we're sure you'll agree some interesting things occured!

Cast I’d Be Most Likely to Buy a Round of Drinks For

Aside from the fact that their series did a big ol’ 180 from the awesomeness of last season, the cast of Heroes continues to be one of the most down-to-earth, fun, enjoyable and fan-friendly shows of many that I’ve fan-girled. From Adrian Pasdar posting videos and responding to comments on YouTube, and Greg Grunberg and Sendhil Ramamurthy playing it to the fangirls with an onstage “kiss” at Comic Con...

An Ode to Peter David

Peter David, King of the One Liners, Queen of Time Travel, Killer of Scotty. You bastard.

I know what you’re thinking, am I kidding? Am I not? Who cares? Well I can’t answer the last one because I like to live in a clean little vacuum of apathy… fewer ulcers that way. What I can say is that it’s Peter David, so really, who knows? (I feel it’s only fair to point to his blog at this point http://peterdavid.net since I’ve already called him names and all.)

If you’ve found this site then odds are the name sounds pretty familiar...

Star Trek Books: The Early Years - Part II

What? This was always meant to be part II. Really. Stop looking at me like that. I had notes and everything. There’s no need to revisit part I’s inspired opening paragraphs regarding my love for the written world of Star Trek lore is there? You get the idea that I feel like there’s just something about these books… the ones I filched from my parent’s basement or bought in a fit of gluttony during those and subsequent years. Maybe much of this is long lost nostalgia, but there are some old favorites in there that are definitely worthy of mention, and so here is part II for all of you who are still along for the ride.

By now some authors should start to look familiar, a few names repeat over and over and greater scholars than I could probably go on at length about writers...

Star Trek Books - The Early Years

It’s hard to describe why I have such a nostalgic love for the earlier Star Trek novels; there was something about them, a level of continuity and in jokes that seemed to go missing for a while. It was all large plots and sweeping stories that liked to kill and maim well known characters, not the least of which was the Enterprise herself. It’s a bevy of tried and true plot twists, sabotage and conspiracies, amnesia (lots of amnesia!) and murder, time travel and alternate universes. While I don’t doubt the later Trek novels - they do tell a mighty fine tale - there is definitely something different about these early stories; stories written and published before an outside hand started sweeping through and giving out guidelines to authors and publishing houses alike. Star Trek, unlike its contemporary, Star Wars, was never originally a firmly held commodity in the written word… at least, not at first.

Also, they wuz fun!...

"Heroes" at the Jules Verne Festival

It seems logical to assume that most of the people waiting in line outside the Los Angeles Theater at 4pm on Saturday, December 15th had never been to a film festival before. The gentlemen from France who hosted the evening’s event – most likely the festival’s creators, Jean-Christophe Jeauffre and Frédéric Dieudonné – on the other hand, had quite probably never been to a fan convention before. And yet, when the first LA branch of the Jules Verne Adventure Film Festival invited the cast and creators of Heroes to be a part of the closing night of the festival, it became inevitable that these two worlds would collide.

The fact that this was a meeting between two very different cultures, despite both being entertainment related, became evident almost as soon as the event began....
